Pokémon Go currently testing exciting new Pokémon Playgrounds feature

  • Pokémon Go is set to debut a new Pokémon Playgrounds feature
  • It’ll allow you to leave your Pokémon in real-world locations
  • Other players can then take snapshots of them, the feature is currently in testing

Pokémon Go has been going strong for a good few years now. Niantic’s flagship title, emblazoned with the logo for one of the most popular franchises out there, maintains its position as arguably the biggest and most successful AR release there has been. But even with consistent content updates, it feels like it’s been a long while since we had something that truly changes up Pokémon Go at its core, until now.

Niantic have quietly begun testing a brand new feature for Pokémon Go, in the form of Pokémon Playgrounds. By leaving your Pokémon at real-world locations, other players will be able to check in and take snapshots of them playing around with fellow Pokémon and just generally relaxing.

The feature may sound simple, but according to Niantic this is forming a testbed for their new VPS (virtual positioning system) that allows them to actually tie Pokémon properly to real world locations. It’s all very complex and involves terms like anchors and how they tie digital content to real-world positioning, but the end result is quite intriguing.

While the Pokémon Playgrounds feature is not necessarily a groundbreaking one, as a sign of things to come I reckon this is quite exciting news. The focus on the VPS system, I reckon, could precipitate even more impressive additions down the line, especially since it actively changes how digital content (like Pokémon) can interact with the real world. Being able to see battles take place in real-time locations, for example, could be just one application of this technology.

Certainly, with the recent debut of features like Gigantamax, there’s plenty of big things that could be shown off if they can be properly overlaid onto real locations.
